Bad Commentators

Like a north wind that brings unexpected rain is a sly tongue- which provokes a horrified look. Proverbs 25:23 NIV.
I have a terrible habit. I enjoy commentating while watching movies and television. Then, I watch reality TV and express negative opinions. I might've picked this up from my parents. They screamed during football games. It got so bad my parrot learned to cry out for help.
The Lord revealed a lot to me at the end-of-year meetings at church. I am a great backbiter. I can mock people while they mess up someone's life. Then, I get angry and criticize how they act. Someone might ruin a marriage or friendship or murmur about others. I see it and talk behind their backs. It is an ugly habit I formed.
I feel joyful to be aware of this. There are steps we can take when we witness another failing.
We could pray for them. Then, offer help. We could step in and rebuke or correct in love. Or we could offer the resources God provided to assist with the situation. Individuals have the power to accept or reject these offers.
I don't want to be a hostile commentator. It's more productive to provide support rather than criticize someone, especially when they are feeling low. Jesus never kicked someone when they were already down. He uplifted and encouraged them. We can follow suit and be more Christ-like. Then, when viciousness rears its ugly head, we can surrender it to One who can defeat it in our hearts.
Guide our words, Lord. Please lead us to speak life and not death. Give us healthy ways to uplift those who struggle. In Jesus’ name, amen.
